FAMOUS TEMPLES IN MUSSOORIE

Nag Devta temple

Dedicated to Lord Shiva, this ancient temple is on Cart Mackenzie Road from Mussoorie to Dehradun and the driveway offers lovely views of the valley. You can visit this place any time of the day similar to almost all the places to visit in mussoorie.

It has a usual spend time of 2-3 hours with the facilities of food stalls around it and washrooms also and one must avoid footwear inside the temple. It gets very crowded only in days of Nag Panchami when it is believed that Lord Shiva himself visits the temple to bless the devotees.

Jawala Devi temple

This goddess Durga temple is situated at the top of Benog Tibba (Hill) at an altitude of 2,240 m. There is no driveway so one has to trek to reach the top of the hill after reaching Benog hill. Like most of the places to visit in mussoorie it also gives the views of the Yamuna and Shivalik range.

Recommended visit time is between 7:00 am to 6:00 pm with 1-2 hours of time spend. The place is very picturesque but don't take pictures at restricted places here.

Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple

Among religious places to visit in mussoorie is the Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple which is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is a natural cave temple popularly known as the “Drona cave”. As per mythology, it is said that as guru Drona did not had enough milk to feed his newborn child, lord shiva fed the child with milk through dripping. One can witness the water always and sometimes milk also dripping onto the Shiva linga in this cave.

Its exploration time is about 1-2 hours with no photo taking restrictions at all and recommended time to visit is between 7:00 am to 6:00 pm.

If you are planning to visit and take bath in the hot water springs nearby, you should carry some plastic bags to put the wet clothes. Do carry a few shawls as the temperature inside the cave is pretty cold.

Shedup Choepelling Temple

It is a Tibetan Buddhist temple, the only among places to visit in mussoorie, established by the Tibetan community of Mussoorie. It an insightful experience to the visitor with long preserved holy books to read, bright interior walls, clay lamps, prayer flags. It is also graced with hills covered with snow outside which makes it a great place for photography.

CHRIST CHURCH

The only church among places to visit in mussoorie,with its gothic design architecture and beautifully stained walls depicting the story of Christ, it is said to be the oldest church in the Himalayan region built around 1836. It is very near to “the mall’ and can be reached on foot easily.

SURKANDA DEVI TEMPLE

The temple is one of the 51 Shakti peeth where pieces of the corpse of Sati (wife of Lord Shiva) fell after being destroyed by Sudarshan Chakra of Lord Vishnu. It demands a two-hour trek on part of the visitor but the divine experience is worth much more than that.

Lakha Mandal

It is a special place of all the places to visit in mussoorie as it is a religious place and also an archeological site.

Mythological importance -

As per Hindu mythology, it is the place where Lakshagraha(house of wax) was built by Duryodhana to kill the Pandavas. Also, there are two statues outside the shrine which are believed to be either of the one - Arjun and Bheem, Danav and Manav (evil and good) or just two doormen.

Historical importance -

The inscription inside the temple dates back to the Gupta period of 8th to 15th century.

Another major attraction is a graphite lingam of this temple shrine, it shines when water is poured upon it and reflects its surrounding.

Betwixt places to visit in mussoorie, Located on Dehradun -kempty road 5 km before Kempty falls, lake mist is a clean, calm, secluded place covered with forest from all sides with multiple waterfalls linking from the Kempty river.

It is a highly visited tourist spot open from 8:00 am to 6:30 pm with no entry fee. Tourists usually spend 2 hours or more here boating and wandering around the lake and having fun under the waterfalls nearby. Nearby guesthouses and restaurants are also available here.

City Board and Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority developed this lake to add to the glorious list of places to visit in mussoorie just 6 km before Dehradun-Mussoorie road as a picnic spot where all can enjoy and spend quality time with people who matter along with paddling the boats together.

It gives a surreal experience along with eye-catching views of the doon valley. It can be visited in any season but as per the popular views, the monsoons make the lake look extra fine. Its open from 8:00 am to 7:00 pm with exploration time of 1 hour or less. Its entry fee is INR 15/- and boating costs extra.

Bhatta Falls

Bhatta Falls is 7 km (4.5 mi) from Mussoorie on the Mussoorie-Dehradun Road and is a completely natural waterfall with zero commercialization. Tourists are advised to carry their own food here and not to pollute the surroundings with wrappers etc.

Jharipani Fall

Jharipani Fall is about 8.5 km (5.5 mi) on Mussoorie-Jharipani road from Mussoorie. It gives an enchanting view of Shivalik ranges and dun valley and is surrounded by varied flowers and shrubs making it a strikingly beautiful place.

The trek to the falls is exhilarating but highly valued by the visitors. The prize one gets after reaching is definitely worth it. It is not a very busy place and sometimes you might be the only visitor. 6:00 am to 6:00 pm is the recommended time.

Mossy Fall

Mossy Fall gets its name from the fog loaded rocks and lush green shades around it. It is a horsetail waterfall surrounded by a dense forest and is 7 km (4.5 mi) from Mussoorie. It is a hidden nature’s spot with slide type waterfalls, totaling 145 feet in height in drops of 20, 17, 19, 12, 20 and 57 feet respectively.

Like most of the places to visit in mussoorie it also offers trek which ranges from medium to difficult depending upon visitors choice.

Its lack of human interaction and high roars of the waterfall with the occasional chirping of birds has the power to rejuvenate the souls so do visit once at least.

Kempty Falls

The Kempty Falls is 15 km (9.3 mi) from Mussoorie along Kempty Fall Road. It is more than 150 years old waterfall, on the hilly tracks of Uttarakhand, developed by Britishers and is the most popular picnic spot.

It is open from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm and entry is free. The place also offers many water sports to indulge into and enjoy a chance to enjoy the refreshing bath under 40 ft waterfall.

For all waterfall places to visit in mussoorie, it is advised to carry extra clothing for an occasional dip or slip into the water and also to avoid being here at night as the roads can get really slippery due to the fog.

Hathipaon

This Park estate itself is popular as it was the residence and office of the first Surveyor-General of India, Sir George Everest after whom, the highest peak in India Mount Everest is named. No one is allowed to enter the house but it has the panoramic views of the doon valley on one side and the Himalayas on the other side which makes it a place worth visiting. This estate offers antique fireplaces, wooden beams, exuberant green surroundings.

Situated at peak of the hill in Saskhet village, Hathipaon is a great addition in the list of places to visit in mussoorie. It has a variety of flora and fauna of the Himalayas and beautiful views of the valley. It is a major attraction among adventure seekers and also has many adventure camps. It serves as a popular and ideal picnic spot where tourists can also purchase souvenirs from the local markets. Rented taxis are available to reach Hathipaon, beyond the point where vehicles are not allowed.

Lal Tibba

Located at Depot Hill in Landour, It is the highest point of the highest peak of all the places to visit in Mussoorie and is one of the popular tourist picnic spots as it is still very natural and away from much commercialization. It offers great views of the valley and is very popular among tourists for its romantic sunsets and sunrises.

The onlooker can have close views of peaks like Badrinath, Kedarnath, Banderpunch with the help of the telescope made available here by the municipality since 1967.

The weather here is generally cold irrespective of the month you visit. You are recommended to take woolen clothes, binoculars and do not forget the camera ever. Roam around, enjoy the scene which takes about 2 hours and have some chai from nearby shops. You will definitely get the feel of hills.

Municipal Garden or Company Bagh

Located 3 km from the mall, the municipal garden is a highly visited among all the places to visit in mussoorie. It has beautiful flower gardens, a mini lake with an artificial waterfall, adventurous rides for kids and an amusement park. It is perfect for a day out for couples or with family and friends.

It is open from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm with entry fee @ 18 INR per person and takes a minimum of 2 hours to explore the whole garden.

You can also do boating here which costs INR 75 per person. The garden also has a small market for souvenirs inside, a food court and a telescope to watch the Himalayas.

ADVENTURE PLACES TO VISIT IN MUSSOORIE

Benog wildlife sanctuary

Nested in pine, fir and cedar trees and abundant medicinal plants Benog wildlife sanctuary is known as a bird watching haven. If wildlife attracts you and especially the birds, this is your go-to place. This sanctuary homes not only birds like White Capped Water Redstart and Red Billed Blue Magpie but many Himalayan species of animals like Himalayan goat, panther, leopard, deer, and bear also.

Spreading across about 339 hectares, this sanctuary can be reached from various places to visit in mussoorie like it is 11 Kms from the library point at mall road, Mussoorie and 3-4 km uphill trek from Cloud's End.

Although the Sanctuary is open the whole year; the best time to visit would be from April to November. It is open from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm all days and will take a minimum of 2 hours to see all that is available here. It has Food Stalls, Washrooms, Lockers. And photography is allowed.

Cloud's End Mussoorie

Like its name, this place marks an end to the geographical boundary of Mussoorie but unlike its name clouds do not end here. From this point to as far as your eyes can see you will see the clouds as a blanket over the rest of the area.

It adds a heritage building built by Major Swettenham in 1838 in the list of places to visit in mussoorie, which speaks of the colonial times with its architecture, paintings, and furnishings. The place attracts wildlife travelers and nature lovers with its 2000 acres of oak and deodar forests offering activities like hill climbing and nature walk.

DHANAULTI

A recent addition in the places to visit in mussoorie is Dhanaulti is a beautiful hill station between Mussoorie (24 km) and Chamba (31 km). Dhanaulti offers a peaceful and relaxed experience away from the crowded markets places around. It gifts the visitor with the peace of the soul with its thick forest of deodar, oak and rhododendrons and enchanting views of the Himalayan peaks.

Dhanaulti itself has many attractions to offer.

  • Barehipani And Joranda Falls which are about 150 meters in height and are lovely picnic spots settled in the Simlipal National Park.
  • Dashavatar Temple of Lord Vishnu which was built in the period of Gupta empire and has its walled carved with Vaishnav mythology.
  • Matatila dam is a popular picnic spot offering various water sports activities.
  • Dhanaulti also has many Forts and Jain temples to visit.

ECO Park Dhanaulti

Major Tourist spot in Dhanaulti is the Eco Parks developed by divisional forest officer and citizens of Dhanaulti which are also employed here.

Dhanaulti has two eco parks - AMBER (sky) and DHARA (land) at a distance of 200 meters from each other.

These parks represented the protected areas of the forest which have been developed for various tourist activities.

One can enjoy walking over the flying fox and Burma bridges, sky walking and horse rides. Mussoorie forest department is also running eco-friendly huts for tourists built by green technology.

Entry fee to these parks in INR 20/- per head and fee of other activities is also nominal. The park also offers its visitors to plant a sapling of tree species in memory of their loved ones. When at the highest peak in the park, you can almost touch the clouds.

BEST TIME TO VISIT MUSSOORIE

Best time to be at all the places to visit in Mussoorie is in the months of September to June as the weather is pleasant and romantic and ideal for people of all ages.

It is advised to not to visit in monsoon season for safety sake as being the hilly area it is very prone to hill slides and driving becomes extremely difficult.
